Mrinal Kaul (b. 1981- ) read for a B.A. (Hons.) in Sanskrit at
St Stephen's College
in University of Delhi (2000-2003), and proceeded to a Certifcate Course in Manuscriptology, an Advanced Course in the Indian Grammatical Traditions and an incomplete M.A. in Sanskrit (with specialization in Nyāya) at Center for Advanced Study in Sanskrit in University of Pune (2003-04).
He returned to St Stephen's College, earning a further M.A. in Sanskrit (with specialization in Indian philosophy) (2004-06), and subsequently an M.St. in Oriental Studies (Classical Indology) from St Cross College in University of Oxford (2006-07). Mrinal is a doctoral fellow at Concordia University in Montreal since 2009.

Mrinal maintains his interest in Indian philosophical literatures, particularly the Kashmirian Śaiva schools, and the Trika system of Abhinavagupta. He is also studying the Sanskritic, Tāntric and Islamic traditions of Kashmir, the Indian Historiography with major focus on ancient and early medieval Kashmir besides Kashmiri and Sanskrit literatures and literary aesthetics. He is also interested in the Kashmiri, Urdu, Indo-Persian and, English languages and literatures.




Mrinal was initially involved in the study of the Ancient Indian Sciences, and subsequently shifted his interest to Indian philosophy. He is also working on several aspects of ancient and early medieval Kashmir, such as language studies in Kashmir, the Śaiva schools of Kashmir, Islam and Sufism in Kashmir and Literature and Rhetoric of Kashmir.

Mrinal was invited by the Prasar Bharati Broadcasting Corporation of India, Radio Kashmir, Jammu, to deliver a series of talks on the Culture and Literature of Kashmir. In all, nine talks were broadcasted in Kashmiri, Sanskrit and Hindustani on different topics. He worked as a part of University Grant's Commission Project on the Concordance of Upaniṣads at the Center for Advanced Study in Sanskrit, University of Pune (2004), and also as a Research Associate at the Abhinavagupta Research Library, Varanasi (2008). He also worked for several long time projects that materialized in publication of a couple of books.

Mrinal has been awarded and nominated for several prizes: nominated for India's Vikas Ratna Award by the National Economic Development & Growth Society, New Delhi (2002); awarded Swami Vivekananda Chicago Lecture's Centenary Prize St Stephen's College for service, Indian culture, personal values and academics (2003); nominated for the award of Poet of the Year 2004 by the International Society of Poets, Florida in recognition of the publication of best English poetry (2004); awarded Asha Chatterjee Prize by St Stephen's College for distinguished academic work, strength of character and leadership qualities (2006); awarded Kishan Pershad Memorial Prize by St Stephen's College for academics and interest in extracurricular activities (2006). Mrinal has also been awarded a number of Scholarships and Fellowships from India and abroad including a Muktabodha Indological Research Institute Graduate Fellowship, California (2006) Muktabodha Indological Research Institute Master's Scholarship, California (2005) Kashmiri Overseas Association Scholarship, Maryland (2006) Ashvattha Narayan Scholarship by Oxford Center for Hindu Studies, University of Oxford (2007), Paul Foundation Scholarship, Calcutta (2008), Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust Fellowship (2009). For his doctoral research he has also received an International Tuition Fee Remission Award (2009) and a doctoral fellowship (2009) by Concordia University
